That Moment in Life

I am fortunate to get to child birth 36 hours every week.  Before you think I am crazy my current profession is a surgical technician.  I just happen to work on a labor and delivery unit.  I have seen the highs and lows of the experience for the past ten years.  One experience that brought tears to my eyes was a couple had a 24 week demise in 2011.  I worked the entire weekend while she labored.  During that time you bond with the families and they look to the staff for guidance.  They know we have experienced death, on a different level, more frequently than them.  February of 2013 the couple came back to the hospital with a full term pregnancy.  She requested the same room as her previous pregnancy.  She dilated to 10 cm but because of CPD ( cephalo pelvic disproportion) she was delivered by cesarean  section.  CPD occurs when the babies head or body is to large to fit through the pelvic canal.  Without a second thought she agreed to the surgery and a healthy baby girl was born.  The baby had and initial evaluation by the nursery staff and was given a 9/9 apgar.  The next event is what brought tears to my eyes.  She kissed her baby girl and said, "I love you, daddy loves you, and your sister told its okay to love you as much as she loved me."  She kissed her again and said, I don't have to go home empty handed this time."  Talk about a touching moment.

Brazil has over a 90% cesarean rate among middle and upper class citizens.  One reason given for opting out of a traditional child birth is the damage done to the body during delivery.  Also the women did not want to feel the pain during labor.  Other reasons given was for the convenience of the physicians.  It is easier to schedule a surgery and know exactly when the baby would arrive.  In 2011 the US C-section rate was 32.8.  That shows a extreme difference in practices.

Started From The Bottom

I have embarked on a new profession with very little knowledge of how it is actually run.  During the past eight weeks reading post, blogs, and resources provided have enlightened me to which direction I am passing.  I would like to thank everyone for commenting and challenging me to think out side of the box or to simply know that a box does not exist.  Some of you are already in the profession and this has given me hope that I will be as passionate in this field as I am in my current profession.  I was told if I love my job I will never work again.  Moving forward I wish for all of you to exceed your own expectations.  I would like to see a podcast one day with you stating your love for the profession.  Good luck with everything.

I'm Just Being Ethical (in my Future voice)

Ethics: A system of MORAL PRINCIPLES

NAEYC

P-2.6  As families share information with us about their children and families, we shall consider this information to plan and implement the program.

As a parent of a child with special needs this is important to me because my child was nonverbal until the age of 6.  At that time she only spoke a few words.  They wanted to use a speaking device with her at school but we were not going to use it at home.  They changed her education plan to be consistent with what she was doing at home.

I-3B.2  To do nothing that diminishes the reputation of the program in which we work unless it is violating laws and regulations designed to protect children or is violating the provisions of the Code.

We have to watch what is said in public about your work place.  We never know who is at the next table and you are representing the company with negativity.

DEC

Professional Collaboration

3.  We shall honor and  respect the diverse backgrounds of our colleagues including such diverse characteristics as sexual orientation, race, national origin, religious beliefs, and other affiliations.

Everyone has a different perspective or beliefs.  This does not make you right and them wrong its is just different.  Sometimes we have to sit back and pay attention to others.  We just may learn a thing or two.

    Talia Castellano

I cried when I saw this story on Ellen DeGeneres Show.  She was as the question why is she not sad or at home doing nothing.  She simply stated I have cancer I am not dead, what do you want me to do cry all day.  This touched me because I was going through a life change that was not at all equivalent to her life and she was doing better than me.  As an adult sometimes we can learn lessons from children.  She also stated that she felt like Dori on Finding Nemo, she was just going to keep swimming until she couldn't swim no more.

    Impressive quote

As adults we have to watch what we say and do around children.  I heard a little boy say oh f##k the other day.  I am sure that was not apart of the curriculum in kindergarten.  They are like sponges and absorb everything we say and do.
